The knowledge and skills built over time are invaluable. The lessons learned by simply living life, taking risks, experiencing the unexpected, and fighting for your success are endless.

Daniel Jordan, owner of Rising Custom Concrete in [] Kentucky, has lived an eventful life, built 20 years of experience, and dove deep into his craft.

Not many people consider concrete floors art. Daniel, unlike most, takes concrete and turns it into something fantastic, and shows his clients that art can come in many forms.

I sat down with Daniel and learned about his story — about how he brings beauty to peoples’ homes and how he navigated obstacles over the years.

How and when did you start Rising Custom Concrete LLC?

Daniel has been laying decorative concrete for around twenty years. He graduated high school, went to a trade school in George called the Decorative Concrete Institute, and immediately starting building his own business.

He said he got a part-time job for about two weeks to save money for tools and then got to work laying concrete!

But why concrete?

Daniel says it mixes his gift for art and his love for building something that will last a long time.

“I was always a good artist. I was good at making things look like something that it originally wasn’t.”

But how can a concrete floor be artistic?

His first experience explains why.

This lady down that lived down the street from Daniel had a bamboo basement floor. Then, one day, the basement flooded!

It ruined the bamboo, and she had to get it completely torn out. Daniel took this opportunity to lend a helping hand.

He researched how to lay concrete and went to help her. She gave Daniel her old wood, and he matched the concrete he laid to look just like her previous bamboo floors!

She still got the aesthetic she wanted, but now she had the durability too.

“Now, when it floods it won’t ruin her floor. She just has to mop it up, but it still looks the same.”

Where did you get the inspiration for the name, Rising Custom Concrete?

Daniel started his first business, was married for 12 years, and went through a rough divorce. It left him with nearly nothing.

He had to start completely over and rise back from the ashes of his divorce. He only had his truck and a whole lot of hustle.

Thus, he found the name of his new business. Rising Custom Concrete LLC. The reference comes from the rising phoenix, a bird that burns away at its death and resurrects new from the ashes.

Life knocks everyone down, but not everyone gets back up. Daniel got back up and didn’t let life take away his passion for concrete art.

What contributed most to your success?

Daniel says that it’s “my love for it” that keeps him motivated and successful. To do something for twenty years, I suppose you have to love it.

He makes good money laying concrete, but it doesn’t feel like work to him.

Mary Lauretta once said, to be successful, the first thing to do is fall in love with your work.

To Daniel, laying decorative concrete is not just a job, it’s creating art. By looking at the concrete he lays as art, he brings a certain quality that many other contractors don’t.

“It’s like bringing light to someone’s eyes when you can take their dreams and bring them to reality.”

Another way Daniel stays successful is by returning to school to learn all the new skills as they come out. As soon as there is something new to learn — he’s there to try it out.

What was a major obstacle that you faced or are facing?

Weather is difficult to get around, but picking indoor jobs helps circumvent that issue.

Like most contractors finding good workers can be the hardest part of the business.

He suggests finding folks that are interested in the kind of work you’re offering but not necessarily in the contracting industry yet.

The best worker that started with him wasn’t doing anything relevant but wanted to learn. So, Daniel took him under his wing and showed him everything he knew.
